The Jammu & Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB) has officially released the Syllabus for the post of Assistant Compiler under the J&K Funds Organisation. The written examination will be of 120 marks with a duration of 2 Hours. The paper is divided into 5 Units covering technical topics related to Civil Engineering Drawing, Building Construction, Surveying, Irrigation, and Estimation along with Computer/AutoCAD knowledge. Candidates preparing for this post must thoroughly study all units as the syllabus is highly technical and diploma-level in nature. The syllabus has been released by the Controller of Examinations, J&K Services Selection Board, Jammu.

📐 Unit 1 – Engineering Drawing, BIS Codes & Building Materials25 Marks
- Drawing as a language of technicians. Drawing office organization. Drawing instruments, equipment, materials – their use, care & maintenance, safety precautions. Introduction to BIS code of practice and Architectural drawings.
- Importance of lettering, printing of letters and figures – sizes, proportions etc. as per BIS code.
- Forms and proportions for single stroke lettering; Lettering stencils.
- Geometrical drawing – definitions, construction of plain geometrical figures. Orthographic projection, dihedral angles and recommended methods of projection according to BIS codes.
- Principles, representation and construction of different types of scales – graphic scales, recommended scales for drawing with reference to BIS codes.
- Dimensioning technique, order of finishing, technical sketching – technique of sketching model drawing, orthographic sketching.
- Conventional signs and symbols as per BIS. Bricks – characteristics of good bricks, hollow bricks and manufacture of bricks.
- Tiles, terracotta, stoneware and earthenware. Sand – types and characteristics. Cement, Lime.

- Sequence of construction of a building. Names of different parts of a building. Brick masonry – principles of construction of bonds, tools & equipment used. Scaffolding.
- Stone masonry – terms used, principles of construction, classification, composite masonry and strength of walls. Timber – structure and Indian timber uses.
- Foundation – purpose, causes of failure, bearing capacity of soils, dead and live loads, examination of ground. Types of foundation. Drawing of footing foundation, setting out of building, excavation, shoring & simple machine foundations.
- Dampness in buildings and damp proof course (DPC). Methods of prevention of dampness. Mortar – types, proportion & mixing. Plastering & pointing. Whitewashing & distempering.
- Types of ground floors and methods of constructing granolithic, mosaic, brick tiles, etc. floors.
- Arches – technical terms, forms, brick and stone centering, lintel. Market forms and sizes.
- Carpentry joints – terms and classification of joints.
- Doors – parts, location, sizes and types. Windows and ventilators including steel windows, fixtures and fastenings used in doors, windows and ventilators.
- Roofs – pitched roof types, roof covering, component parts. Theory of trussing – king and queen post trusses.
- Classification and construction of upper floors including waterproofing. General principles of construction of masonry & RCC.
- Stairs – terms, forms, materials, planning and designing of stairs. Details of construction.
- Residential building – principles of planning, orientation, local building by-laws including BIS code, types of rooms, services and utilities constituting a dwelling house. Estimating.
- Methods to find out quantities for a single-storied residential building.
- Perspective view – types, method of construction, technique of colouring and shading.
- Inking & tracing. Operating of Leroy set & care of accessories. Method of preparing Blueprints or Ammonia Prints. Folding of prints.
- Safety precautions & elementary first aid. Forge and fuel. Lighting fire. Common hand tools – description and use. Description of plumbing operations.
- Carpenter’s hand tools – names, description and use. Common joints. Use of nails, screws, hinges, dowels, etc. Preparation of glue & putty. Grinding & sharpening of tools. Properties and uses of different timbers used in construction work.
- Safety precautions and elementary first aid. Artificial respiration and treatment of electrical shock. Elementary electricity. General idea of supply system. Wireman’s tool kits. Wiring materials. Electric fittings. System of wiring. Wiring installation for domestic lighting.

- Tools – description, uses and care.
- Details of different bonding wall and section according to BIS.
- Chain surveying – principles, instruments employed, use, care & maintenance, field problems, field book plotting. Introduction to plane table survey. Prismatic compass. Planimeter and Pantograph.
- Instruments and accessories – their uses and description. Level book. Differential leveling. Application of chain and leveling to building construction. Plotting, preparation of contour. Computing earthwork by spot level and contours. Setting out work.
- Roads – introduction, general principles of alignment, classification and construction of different types of roads.
- Indian Railways – their gauges, construction of permanent ways. Different rail sections. Use of stone ballast in railway track. Use and types of sleepers, types of signals, fixtures & fastenings in railway tracks including base plates and fishplates.
- Bridges – introduction, component parts of a bridge. Classification of culverts (IRC).
- Bridges – types and location of bridges.
- Tunnels – rules used for sizes of different members.
💧 Unit 4 – Irrigation, Dams, Canals, RCC & Public Health Engineering20 Marks
- Definition of terms used in irrigation.
- Hydrology – duty, delta, intensity of irrigation, hydrograph, peak flow, runoff, catchment area (CCA), crops like Rabi and Kharif, etc.
- Storage / Diversion headworks – definitions.
- Types of Dams – masonry, concrete & composite dams.
- Gravity Dam, Arch and Buttress Dams, Earth and Rock fill dams.
- Reservoir – types (single purpose and multi-purpose), area/capacity curves of reservoir.
- Canals – classification and distribution system, canal structures viz. Head Regulators, Cross Regulators, Canal Outlet, Escape, etc. Drawing of canal alignment including longitudinal and cross sections of canals with given data.
- Types of cross drainage works viz. Aqueducts, Super Passage, Level Crossing, Irrigation Culvert – inlets and outlets. General description. Elements of water power development and various civil engineering structures of Hydro Electric Schemes – Forebay, Penstock, Turbines, Power House, etc.
- Introduction – terms used in public health engineering. System of sanitation, house plumbing, sanitary fittings, etc. Types of supply system and purification of water.
- Introduction to RCC – uses, materials, proportions and formwork, including bending of bars and construction with reference to BIS code. Reinforced brickwork.
- Materials used for RCC – coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, cement, water, reinforcement characteristics. Method of mixing concrete – hand and machine, slump test.
- Forms of rivets, proportions. Types of riveted joints.
- Design of riveted connection. Failure of riveted joints.
💻 Unit 5 – Estimation, Building By-Laws, Computer Basics & AutoCAD20 Marks
- Types of estimate. Standard method of taking out quantity. Labour & material – detailed & abstract estimate. Analysis of rates for simple items of work. Schedule of rates. Specifications.
- Residential building – planning, local by-laws including BIS code. Types of residential building rooms, service utilities constituting a dwelling house. Building by-laws of State Urban Development Authorities, Improvement Trust, etc.
- What is a Computer – general terms used in computer.
- Elementary DOS commands.
- Windows commands and their uses.
- AutoCAD commands and use of different Icons of AutoCAD.
- Knowledge about different coordinate systems.
- Knowledge about 3D Drafting.
- Knowledge about Architectural Desktop and creating modelling.
Preparation Tips for JKSSB Assistant Compiler 2026
- Unit 2 – Building Construction (30 marks) has the highest weightage. Master topics like masonry, foundation types, DPC, roof trusses, stairs, and residential planning thoroughly.
- Unit 1 & Unit 3 (25 marks each) – Focus on Engineering Drawing as per BIS codes, Orthographic Projection, Chain Surveying, Leveling, Road and Railway construction.
- Unit 4 (20 marks) – Study irrigation terminology, types of dams, canal structures, and RCC materials carefully. These are scoring topics if practised with diagrams.
- Unit 5 (20 marks) – AutoCAD and computer knowledge is straightforward to score. Revise AutoCAD commands, 3D drafting, coordinate systems, and estimation methods.
- Since the exam is objective MCQ type, practise previous year JKSSB technical papers and Civil Engineering ITI/Diploma level MCQs.
- Pay attention to negative marking (¼ mark per wrong answer) – avoid guessing on topics you are unsure about.
- Refer to BIS codes, IRC standards and standard Civil Engineering textbooks (diploma level) for Unit 1, 2, and 3 preparation.
